Third rate vessels refer to a system the British Royal Navy used to classify displacement and the quantity of armament on their vessels, from 5th rates that carried fewer guns, and 1st rates that carried many guns across multiple decks.
Towards the 1800s, 3rd Rate warships typically carried no fewer than 60 guns, but no more than no more than 90 spread across 2 decks, and offered a good compromise between speed, cost and firepower that made them popular with both navies.
